A Serbian tutor online: how to choose one, what it costs, and when you do not need one
A good Serbian tutor online costs €15–25 an hour, and you find one on Preply, italki or Superprof — if you check teaching experience and experience with learners from your language. But one hour a week solves only part of the problem: between lessons you need a course, practice and someone to write to. That is how Lingomir’s mentor programme works: a personal call every week plus the mentor in the chat every working day and the full course on the platform, for €119 a month.
What a Serbian tutor costs
On the international marketplaces the spread is wide: Serbian is taught on italki and Preply for $4–40 an hour, but most lessons sit at $10–25. The cheap end is students and “community tutors” without a method; experienced teachers with a programme charge $18–30. In Serbia itself, on Superprof and local sites, an hour of Serbian for foreigners averages €12, from €9.
So if you want an experienced teacher rather than a conversation partner, budget €15–25 an hour. Four lessons a month is €60–100 — and that is only the hours: no course, no materials between lessons, and nobody to answer a question on a Wednesday evening.
How to tell a teacher from a student
- Teaching experience, not just “native speaker”. A native speaker tells you how people say it, not always why; for cases, verbal aspect and stress you need someone who has taught them.
- Experience with your language. A teacher who has worked with Russian or English speakers knows the typical mistakes in advance.
- A programme, not improvisation. Ask what the plan is and how you will know your level has grown.
- Materials between lessons. What you do on the other six days — and whether anyone checks it.
- A trial lesson — almost everyone offers one; watch not for charm but for whether you are corrected and told why.
When you do not need a tutor
At A0–A1, while you learn the system — the alphabet, cases, the verb “to be”, the first hundred words — a structured course does most of the work: an explanation, checked exercises and scheduled word reviews. The full 260-topic course in Lingomir is built for exactly that, and three lessons a week are free. A tutor at this stage often retells the textbook for your money.
A person becomes necessary when speech does: setting stress, unlearning calques, preparing for a specific conversation at the bank or the police, answering a question that is not in any textbook. And then it matters that they are around more than once a week.
How the mentor programme differs from a tutor
In the mentor programme the mentor is also an experienced teacher of Serbian with real teaching experience: that is the standard of selection, students and self-taught tutors are not taken in. The format is different:
- a one-hour personal call every week at a convenient time — as with a tutor;
- the mentor in the chat every working day: a question, a check of what you wrote, a mistake explained, a reply within the working day — a tutor usually offers none of this;
- after every call the platform itself prepares a summary, a cheat sheet and picks materials — our lessons and words as well as outside videos and articles — and keeps it all in one place;
- between calls the course works: 260 topics, exercises, dialogues with the residents of the virtual Novi Sad, a dictionary with reviews;
- a mini-group of up to ten with a shared chat — for practice if you want it; you can also study alone;
- your own pace: a busy week or a holiday breaks nothing.
€119 a month, now €99 with the discount; Premium included. Extra calls cost €20 an hour. Enrolling now: signing up commits you to nothing, and you pay only once the group starts.
How to choose
You only need an hour of speech with a native speaker once a week and already know the system — take a tutor from a marketplace and check their experience. You need someone who guides and answers every day, plus a course and practice between meetings — that is the mentor programme. You are just starting and want to see whether the language is for you — begin with the free course and add a mentor when you reach speech.
