The best apps and courses for learning Serbian in 2026: an honest comparison

The short answer depends on the job. One tool for a self-study route from zero to fluent speech — a full course with exercises and speaking practice — is Lingomir. Grammar alone, in a syllabus with written exercises, is Govorim srpski. Five minutes of words a day is Molim or Ćao!. A teacher and a group is SmartLab, Frendi or an accredited school. The table and the details are below. The data comes from the services’ own sites on 17 September 2026; we are an interested party, so every line is written to be checked in a minute.

The table: who does what

The table does not rank: a school with a teacher and an app for three minutes a day solve different problems. Below is what each option does better than the others and where its limits are.

Lingomir: a course and a game at the same time

The main difference is that Lingomir does not make you choose between depth and motivation. The base is a full course of 260 CEFR-graded topics from A0 to C2: phonology and both scripts, nouns, verbs, syntax, vocabulary, communication. Every topic has a lesson, a cheat sheet and exercises of nine kinds, 13,780 in all; every lesson has been academically reviewed. It is a course of language-school depth that you can take on your own: a placement test picks the start, the order of topics is set, exercises are checked automatically. On top of the course sits a game layer that “serious” courses usually lack: a virtual Novi Sad with 67 residents who have a character, a mood and a memory of your conversations, XP and ranks, streaks, daily quests, places on the map and a leaderboard. Speech is practised in 138 scenarios from real life in Serbia — the bank, renting, the police, the doctor — by text or by voice, and the AI reviews your mistakes after every line. A 4,300-word dictionary with stress marks and Cyrillic forms runs the spaced repetition.

The limits, honestly: there is no teacher; the lessons are in Russian for now, the English edition is being translated one by one; the app runs in the browser, with no native apps and no offline mode; payment is by card in euros, dinars or dollars, not in rubles. Govorim srpski: grammar in a syllabus

The most textbook-like of the self-study services: a rule first, then written exercises — gaps, choice, ordering, translation — and a level test at the end of the unit. 77 units from A1 to C2, each with grammar, a word list, guided lessons, reading and listening. Examples come in both scripts with a toggle; explanations are for Russian and English speakers. The whole grammar catalogue, the written exercises and all of A1 are free; Premium adds the remaining unit lessons, speaking with transcription and AI review of written work. Rubles are accepted.

What it lacks: dialogues with characters, a game layer and real-life situations in Serbia as a layer of their own — it is a textbook with exercises, not a conversation trainer. A good choice if what you need is grammar and you already speak somewhere else.

Ćao!: short lessons every day

A three-to-five-minute trainer: 2,000+ lessons over 270+ topics from A1 to C2, 160+ rules explained simply, spaced repetition, a microphone pronunciation check and 70+ scripted dialogues. Both scripts. 32 lessons of the first six topics are free; after that a subscription, the cheapest on this list when paid in rubles. The format is good for a habit; for a systematic treatment of grammar the lessons are short — by design.

Molim: words for life, three minutes a day

Not a course but a vocabulary trainer for people relocating: words from rental contracts, shops, cafés and offices, spaced repetition, a separate false-friends module, both scripts and short scripted dialogues with characters. Almost no grammar — on purpose. 5 words a day and two decks are free; Molim+ lifts the limits. A good companion to any course, but not a self-study route to speech on its own.

VukDaily: free mini-lessons and a bot

Mini-lessons of about three minutes right in the browser, phrases by situation — café, housing, health, paperwork, transport — explanations for Russian speakers, false-friends sections and a level test. The core is free with no sign-up; speaking practice and premium features live in a Telegram bot. Good for starting today without deciding anything about subscriptions.

Frendi, SmartLab, Centar Slovo, Azbukum: when you want a teacher

If a live teacher and a group matter to you, apps are not competitors to schools. Frendi runs online groups with native teachers (32 classes over four months to A1, then on to B1) and sells a recorded video course for a self-paced route. SmartLab is a school in Novi Sad and Belgrade with an online format: mini-groups of up to six, two classes a week from a textbook for Russian speakers, unlimited speaking clubs and its own online course; a month costs 11,900 RSD. Centar Slovo (Belgrade, A1–C1) and Azbukum (Novi Sad, since 1995, A1–C2) run state-accredited programmes; Azbukum also has a self-paced online course up to B2. In that combination Lingomir works as daily practice between classes: exercises, reviews and dialogues while the teacher works on your pronunciation.

How we compared

Where Lingomir loses

Govorim srpski gives more free grammar in textbook form and accepts rubles. Ćao! and Molim are cheaper when paid in rubles and lighter as a three-minute daily habit. VukDaily is entirely free to start. Any school gives you a live teacher, which we do not have. We win where one complete tool is needed: a course to C2 with exercises, speech with mistakes reviewed and the motivation to reach the end — in one place, free to start, no card.
