How to choose a Serbian app or course: what to look for
Choose a Serbian course by eight things: whether every word carries its stress mark, whether both scripts are taught, whether there is somewhere to actually speak (not just tap), whether it covers the everyday situations of moving to Serbia, whether it has spaced repetition, how far up the CEFR scale it goes, and what exactly is free. Most apps for «smaller» languages fail the first question — no stress marks — and for Serbian that is half the language. Below is the checklist, and an honest account of where Lingomir meets it and where it does not.
1. A stress mark on every word
Free, unmarked stress is the main difficulty of Serbian. If a course’s dictionary does not show it, you are learning words you will have to relearn. Easy to check: open any word. In Lingomir the stress is marked on each of the 4,300 words.
2. Both scripts
A Latin-only course leaves you without road signs and government offices; a Cyrillic-only one, without menus and messaging. You need both, and practice switching (Digraphia in practice).
3. Somewhere to speak
Flashcards and quizzes build recognition, not speech. Ask: is there a place where you form the sentence yourself, get an answer and get corrected? In Lingomir that is the dialogues with the residents of a virtual Novi Sad — by text or voice, with a review of mistakes after every line.
4. Everyday situations, not only «at the airport»
For people moving to Serbia the bank, the police, renting, the doctor and the tax office matter — topics tourist phrasebooks do not have. Check whether the course has them. Lingomir has 138 scenarios, sorted by the place they happen in.
5. Spaced repetition
Without it vocabulary does not accumulate: what you learned on Monday is gone by Friday. A good course brings the word back at the right moment on its own.
6. How far the course goes
Many courses end at A2 — exactly where real speech begins. Ask about the upper bound. Lingomir is 260 topics from A0 to C2; B1–C2 is more than half the course.
7. The language of explanations
Lingomir’s lessons are written in Russian, for the Russian-speaking newcomers who make up most of the people moving to Serbia; the English edition is being translated. 8. What is really free
«Free» often means three lessons and a paywall. The honest answer should be specific. For honesty’s sake: lessons are in Russian for now; voice features are in Premium; it runs in the browser — native iOS and Android apps do not exist yet, though one account and one progress across devices already work; and it is not a substitute for a human tutor for pitch accent — the AI reviews mistakes in your speech, but only a person sets tones.
Ten minutes to test any course
Open the dictionary — is stress marked. Open a B1 lesson — does it exist. Try to say a sentence — is there anywhere to. See what happens when the free part ends. Four answers usually settle it.
