Technology & digital life

Lesson opening

This is the first part of the lesson. The rest, the exercises and the reviews are in the app.

Technology & digital life: šta ima na mreži?

Digital Serbian is full of English words, but a borrowed word does not stay foreign for long: Serbian spells it the way it sounds, gives it a gender, and declines and conjugates it like one of its own.

Uređaji: what you hold in your hands

Any piece of technology is a uređaj “device”. A phone is a telefon, in speech also simply a mobilni. For “computer” Serbian has a word of its own, računar, from računati “to calculate” (like English computer from compute), but kompjuter is heard too.

Internet and connection

Wireless internet is officially bežični internet; out loud it is vaj-faj, simply “Wi-Fi” spelled the Serbian way. In a café you ask for its password with the word šifra, literally “code”: in everyday speech it is any password or PIN, while a login screen says lozinka. Since 1 July 2021 there has been practically no roaming inside the Western Balkans: a Serbian SIM card works “like at home” in Sarajevo and Podgorica.

Nalog i lozinka: accounts
