Free time & culture

Lesson opening

This is the first part of the lesson. The rest, the exercises and the reviews are in the app.

Free time & culture: šta radiš u slobodno vreme?

Asking about free time is the shortest road from polite formulas to a real conversation.

Slobodno vreme: how the conversation starts

Two questions: Šta radiš u slobodno vreme? “What do you do in your free time?” and the more grown-up Čime se baviš?, literally “what do you occupy yourself with?”, which is English “What do you do?”, for a job and a hobby alike. Many pastimes are named by a noun in -nje made from a verb, the way English makes -ing nouns: čitati “to read” gives čitanje “reading”.

When: vikendom “at weekends” and subotom “on Saturdays” (every week), but u subotu “on Saturday” (this one); uveče “in the evening”, večeras “tonight” (the lessons “Accusative of time” and “Predicate & temporal”).

Four ways to say “I like”

English says “I like”, “I love”, “I do”, “I’m interested in”. Serbian has four patterns, and the case that follows (the ending a noun takes for its job) is part of each: the nominative (the dictionary form), the accusative (the object) or the instrumental (“with, by”).

Two patterns turn the English sentence inside out: in Sviđa mi se ovaj film the film is the subject, “this film pleases me”, like Spanish me gusta; in Zanima me istorija history “interests me”. Four more patterns: više volim … nego … “I prefer … to …”, ne podnosim “I can’t stand”, the colloquial ludim za + instrumental, “I’m crazy about”, and uživati u + locative (the case of location), “to enjoy”: Uživam u dobroj muzici. “I enjoy good music.” English enjoys a thing directly; Serbian enjoys in it. With a plural thing the verb is plural: sviđaju mi se. To ask for an impression: Kako ti se sviđa? “How do you like it?”
