Education & media: school, diplomas and the evening news

The lesson “Work & study” taught you to name a profession. Now the system: how Serbian schools and universities work, what the marks mean, which papers you need to enrol a child or have a foreign diploma recognised. The second half is the media, and passing on what you have read.

The stages: od vrtića do doktorskih studija

Serbian children spend eight compulsory years in one osnovna škola, roughly what the US splits into elementary and middle school. Then comes secondary school, and after that university. A gimnazija is one kind of secondary school: four academic years after the eighth grade, ending in the matura, the school-leaving exams. It is never a gym.

Ocene i ispiti: from jedinica to desetka

School marks run from 1 to 5, and 5 is the best (in Germany it is the reverse). Each mark has two names, an official one and an everyday one. You dobiti “get” a mark, and the teacher dati “gives” it.

Around them live prosek “average mark” (a grade point average), prolazna ocena “pass mark”, svedočanstvo “end-of-year report card” and ponavljati razred “to repeat a year”.

At university a student studira “studies”, and before an exam uči “revises”: Učim za ispit “I’m revising for an exam” (the difference is in the lesson “Work & study”). Classes are predavanja “lectures” and vežbe “tutorials, practical classes”; a written assignment for a course is a seminarski rad “seminar paper”. Exams are sat in an ispitni rok “exam period”: junski rok, septembarski rok. To take an exam is polagati, to pass it položiti, and to fail it pasti na ispitu, literally “to fall at the exam”. University marks run from 5 to 10, and a 5 there is a fail.
